Let me just start this by saying that we usually have quite uneventful days. Easton plays great by himself and is really such a good boy. However, this week has been an extreme exception to the rule. Yesterday, we went to my Mom’s house to can some grape jelly. We got there before anyone else did, so it was just Easton, Averie and I. Easton was being a good little boy playing by himself, or so I thought. I went into the playroom to let him know I needed him to play quiet so I could make a phone call. I walked into the room to find a doll on fire. Yes, you read it right. There was a doll ON FIRE! I totally panicked and didn’t know what to do. I knew that my parents didn’t have a fire extinguisher, so I went and grabbed a towel and threw it on the fire. Thankfully, that put the fire out and we avoided a serious catastrophe. (Let me pause here and tell you how grateful I am that I went into the playroom when I did. It scares me to think what would have happened had I not gone in there. It’s now and only now that I can see the slight humor of the situation.)
I looked over at Easton and he was just standing there looking at me. On the table next to him was a box of quick light matches. The kind with the strip on the outside of the box that you have to strike to light them. I looked at the doll and I see a blackened match now fused to the charred belly of the poor baby. So many questions ran through my mind. Where the corn did Easton get matches and how the heck did he know how to light one? I did not have any idea what to do. I took Easton’s hand and practically threw him into time out. I didn’t even know what to do!! I called Landon and told him what happened and asked for some input on how he’d like us to handle the situation. He was super helpful and said. “Honey, I’m not sure what to tell you. Good luck.” Thanks hon! Luv ya!! Anyway, I got Easton out of timeout and had a lengthy heart to heart on how scary and dangerous matches can be. I’m not sure if I handled it the right way, but I didn’t know exactly what to do? So, my questions to you is how in the world would you have handled this situation? And please, let’s all pray that we don’t have a “part 3” to this post, k?

Remember the "Joys of Boys"? Sorry I cant help you!
What a crazy experience! I'm so glad no one was hurt! I think you handled it the best way it could have been. And maybe now Easton will remember this and know better next time. By the way, I love the phrase, "Where the corn?"! I think you did good, mom!
QUESTION.. WHO LEFT THE FIRE STICK
DOWN WERE SO MANY LITTLE ONES
COULD GET THEM ??? NOT LET ME THINK ?????
AND I NO FIRE EXTINGUISHER >>
G'PA ROBBINS IS DOING A ONE EIGHTY
ABOUT NOW..
WHAT YOU DID WAS PROBLEY THE BEST
.. NOT MUCH MESS BUT THE TALK YOU HAD WITH YOUR SON WAS THE BEST..
Wow I only get too look forward to moments like these. Just so you know girls aren't all sugar and spice all the time either. I think I probably would have done what you did. I would have flipped a little thrown Madi in time out and then talked to her about it after, but I am not sure there is a right way for that type of situation. I think you handled it the best you could without flipping out too much!! Did your mom tell you what she would have done?
I bet your mom...and each of you...get a fire extinguisher now. Or, you have something to buy them for Christmas at least :)
And I guess Easton is letting you know he doesn't like dolls so much.
I can't even imagine your thoughts when you walked in on that scene! Wow. Joys of boys is right!
Boys. That I do know. We haven't had any fires but many other experiences. and I have really good boys. But when I have a week or two where Brenten is especially naughty (taking batting out of a quilt I just finished...)he usually follows it with some kind of illness. I don't know why but its wierd. Oh one thing that helps me is the boys get a cup they get marbles when they do things really good and they lose them when they do something they know they aren't supposed to. Landon gets marbles for listening and for no accidents in his pants. And Brenten's right now is mostly for doing what I ask the first time I ask. When they fill their cup they get to go to the store and pick out a $5 toy or they can pick for us to go out for ice cream. It really helps during the mischievious times. Just an idea. I hope you have a better day today. Sorry for the crazy long comment.
What a Crazy day for you! I can't believe little quite Easton could do such a big thing. I know you keep telling me he is not quite but he always seems so sweet and innocent. Your a great mom!:)
AHHH! I would have done exactly what what you did, THROW him in time out!!...until I calmed down and firgured out what to say. I can't believe he knew how to light them! I'm glad he wasn't hurt!
You did good Sweetie. I don't think there is a protocol for such things. And I am so proud of Landon for the great amount of help he gave. ha, ha Anyway...like you said, I bet those matches find their way to a much higher spot where little ones can't even begin to be able to reach them. And I am very glad you were listening to the Spirit when you went in there, even if you didn't realize it at the time. I liked the marble idea above, but since marbles are considered a choking hazard you might want to get another chart and stickers from me and use it that way. Just an idea...
Love you tons! Mom
I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing, no help at all
What a scary moment. You handled it perfect, I know I would have freaked out! Now I'm sure its a story for the books that will just bring smiles to everyone!
